How to Replace a New USB-C Charge Cable for Free

Recently, Apple launched a worldwide replacement program for USB-C cables that affected by the design flaw may exhibit issues with charging retina MacBook, such as intermittent charging of the machine while the cable is connected to a power source, or the MacBook failing to charge at all while the cable is connected to a power source. The affected USB-C cables were shipped with the 12 inch Retina Macbook, or purchased as stand-alone accessories before June 2015.

This means the eligible MacBook owners can get a new, redesigned USB-C charge cable for free.

How to Identify an Affected Cable

The USB-C replacement program only applies to units known to be affected by the manufacturer’s defect. As Apple points out on the replacement program page, there is an easy way to tell whether your USB-C cable is affected or not.

All USB-C cables will say “Designed by Apple in California Assembled in China” on them, but only cables affected by the design flaw will lack the serial number information after the word “China,” as shown below:

Replacement Process

Apple requires your MacBook serial number to verify eligibility for this program. Learn how to find your serial number here. The replacement process can be initiated at an Apple Store with a Genius Bar appointment, at an authorized reseller or online via Apple Support channels. The program runs through June 8, 2018 so you have a couple of years to get your cables swapped out.
